With increasing international trade from globalisation, emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) from maritime transport has been discussed extensively at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meetings. Of the potential measures to reduce GHG emission, increasing discussion centres around alternative sources of future maritime energy to address this global challenge.

It is more than a fuel. Will LNG be the upcoming dominant fuel? Is biofuel a viable option? How are battery & charging technologies making a difference in the electrification of maritime applications? Will hydrogen be sustainable for total decarbonisation? Sailing towards a new era of maritime energy, there is a need to establish a holistic value chain to supply the fuel/energy from the source to the propulsion. Behind the scenes will be fuel generation and supply, new infrastructure, bunkering facility and so on.

This year, the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) is pleased to partner the newly launched Maritime Energy & Sustainable Development (MESD) Centre of Excellence in Nanyang Technological University for the SMI Seminar 2018 to gather interested stakeholders to shed more light on these impending challenges. Themed “Next Generation Maritime Energy” , the 5th edition of SMI’s annual seminar will bring together the key decision makers from international organisation, local regulator, ship owners, technology facilitators, oil majors and the research community to share their perspectives on alternative future maritime energy research and technology solutions to address the global challenge in driving toward zero emission from maritime transport. Participants comprising senior/mid-management representatives from the industry and academia, can expect presentations by distinguished industry and academia leaders and experts, to be followed by a panel discussion for an exchange of insights and views on the subject.

We are pleased to have Mr Tan Suan Jow, Director (Sustainability Office) of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to deliver the Welcome Remarks at the event. Other confirmed speakers include:
