The presentation is a review of the past 25years of experience of designing high speed vessels in aluminium. Having designed vessels ranging from High Speed Patrol Boats to Fast ferries to SWATHs, each hull form and application has brought new discoveries of the do’s and don’ts of aluminium. From the early days of the late 80s where little was known to today where significant advances have been made, yet often the same mistakes are still made. The presentation highlights the importance of a multidiscipline approach to design rather than designing/fabricating in isolation or ignorance of other disciplines. Examples of good and bad practice are shown and the how quality control is the key to a successful design.
